Coming up: Around the Island

August 5th is the James H. Wilson "Around the Island" Race. You know it, you love it. Mr. Jimmy was a big proponent of the race where we get to stretch our legs a bit in the big water of Eastern Bay.

Last year, we had a drifter that had to be shortened in order to save our sanity. I'm not sure we saved it. Normally it's 7.5 miles of "where the heck is the current taking us?"

Things to remember:

There is a new mark! You must honor Scotland (E on the sailing instructions, or red nun "12" near the mouth of the Miles River).

It's an early start - Stars warning is 5:45 pm.

You can go around the Island either way. You just have to figure out where the current is favorable (good luck!).

The Race Committee will monitor VHF 78 all evening. You never know what might happen, so we'll be on channel 78.

If you manage to go aground on the Island because you're sneaking in too close, you get a special award at the end of the year.

Edmee is Sailing to Oxford

The Log Canoe on which I sail, Edmee S., is planning to sail from St. Michaels to Oxford on August 6th in honor of 150 years of log canoe racing. 150 years ago no one was towing around in relative comfort and no one was trailering to a convenient boat ramp.

If you're interested in following us as we sail around, here’s the plan: Thursday, August 6th, 10:30am

  • We will start at Green "1" at the mouth of the Miles River
  • Once the canoe is south of Green "1" entrance to Knapps Narrows, tow through.
  • Once East of Green "5" on the Choptank side of the narrows, start sailing again.
  • Finish will be R"2" off the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

Rain day is Friday, August 7th, 10:30am.

We’re planning to bring two chase boats and several extra crew. We’re also going to try to bring some photographers from local news groups. Sailing through Knapps Narrows is not allowed (bridge tender would get mad), so we're going to tow through.

Could be stupid, could be fun - most likely both. Hope to see you out there.

Races Abandoned for July 29th

There are just some nasty looking storms all around us! We're abandoning all races for the evening just to be safe. Of course, this means that the storms will miss us. At least no one will get hurt trying to sail in this stuff.

Good winds - Good times

The weather report held true last night. Well, for the most part. There was no question that the wind built as the evening went on, but the wind shifts were definitely making it hard to get the line square before the start.

When we got out to the race course at 5:30, the wind was blowing straight from the harbor making it look like the PHRF boats would have lots of reaching up and down the river. Typical Miles River fashion, the wind decided to change to the SW just before the attention signal causing us to postpone while we reset the weather mark and the line.

It was very confusing to move at the last minute and we probably should have given ourselves even more time. Judi wasn't there to calm us with her sweet voice on the radio, so I was reading the times in my abrupt hawking voice - even I was disturbed!

Fortunately that didn't seem to bother the classes. The Stars got out very clean with good spread down the line. I guessed they noticed the pin was favored and that the wind was still shifting to the south. A class was clear, but there was a tendency to load up at the committee boat. B class was all about the barging start! Lots of inter-boat communication and a bit of touching. The people who started at the pin really made out!

Close reaching from the first mark to the Gibson Flats mark with only a couple boats trying the chute, but jibe at the flats and race out the river! With the wind building and puffing, boats ended up at the Scotland mark in no time.

With the wind still backing, the Stars found the course to be more of a broad reach to the leeward mark and a one-tack approach to the windward mark. We barely had time to get set up for the finish! Excellent job by Mike on Seabiscuit who somehow managed to go right and still come in second. Eric on Rebel Yell cleaned up practically surfing across the finish line for a 1st.

In the A class, Rumor (racing without intrepid skipper, Harry) came in an impressive second in the building air, but the real show was Jeff's Ostinato who showed us what that J/105 can do coming in a whopping 4 minutes before Rumor and correcting into 1st place.

The B class had several good performances. Janet's Pennyless and Si's Cabaret both had excellent nights. The Higgins Factory Team on Hopped Up also did an amazing job considering that they only had two people and lots of wind to deal with. But it was the Monster on the Course that managed to finish first. Norm's Pagan came across the line with more than 3 minutes on the fleet and still easily corrected into first. It's scary being on the RC with Pagan baring down on you. It looks like a train coming at you. You just hope they tack in time!

Glad to see the classes mixing up. See you out there next week.

Tillerman's Paraphrasing

Tillerman has some advice for you! To paraphrase Woody Allen,
"Eighty percent of success at a regatta is finishing every race."

How are you doing? You've got the boat ready to race, you've conned the crew on board with beer and allusions to greatness... Are you getting your boat around the course?

Beautiful Evenings

If you have been thinking about joining us for the Racing on Wednesday Nights, you should! We have had an excellent turnout of boats each night and the weather is still gorgeous. We've been seeing 18 PHRF boats and 12 Stars. Still plenty of room on the line for you sailors out there who want to come enjoy the summer evenings. We can't guarantee wind or sunsets, but it happens often!

Discussions and More Discussions

Holly Cats! did we talk about the races on the 24th. Everything appears to be settled now, but yes, the course was a little non-standard.

It's okay, though. We spent a lot of time talking about it in the Steering Committee and Race Committee groups. The "hook finish" was a little unusual, but the communication on the course was good and all boats sailed the same course. It was felt that the course was fair to all competitors, so the race can be scored. All the hard work you put in to race will count.

Rest assured - no more hook finishes on purpose. We try to make everything perfect and every once and a while we succeed. We love to have your input, but be careful about how give input on the water. I'm usually at the club afterward and we can always talk over email.

Still mentally on Vacation

I leave for vacation only to return to craziness! Block Island Race Week was a lot of fun, but the timing is particularly bad for me.

Let me see if I can get us caught up with results.
