Awards Friday Oct 30 - RSVPs needed

Hey everyone!

Our annual awards party is this Friday, October 30, beginning at 6pm at MRYC. Captains & crews welcome!

Chef Billy's cooking up great BBQ chicken. MRYC will provide plates and utensils, too. To keep costs down, we racers being side dishes, salads, and desserts. Cash bar.

If you're planning to come, we need to know so the kitchen is prepared. Please RSVP. There are two very simple ways to RSVP that you are coming. Pick which works best for you!

Option 1 ONLINE - WNR 2015 Awards Online Purchase - tell us how many of you are coming and opting for the dinner option ($12 per person), and how many are coming but won't be eating (for planning purposes). You'll be asked for your name & email, and you'll have to provide a valid credit card. It's very simple to use, just follow the instructions.

Option 2 PHONE MRYC - 410.745.9511 - if you prefer to charge your dinner to your house account, you have to call MRYC directly.

Please spread the word. We know there are some captains & crews out there who may not have direct access to this blog or email.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone this Friday, but to make this as successful as in years past, we do need to know if you're coming.

Thanks,
Mariana

Time for Awards - get your tickets

Oh yeah! It's time for awards.

Just to keep things interesting (and to use you all as guinea pigs), we're going to sell the tickets to this year's awards online! This is a new experience for all of us, so be patient and we can work it out.

How does it work? Well, follow this link:

You can buy your tickets right there online. We will know your name at the door, or you can also print out tickets and bring them with you. Either way, you are set after you buy your tickets. If you want to double-check, you can send me an email.

What if you are an MRYC member and you want to charge it to your house account? We can still do that, but you will need to call the Club and talk to Cherrie. She is like talking to the ticket agent at a box office and she can sell you tickets.

But you can do it online - I know you can! I have great confidence in you.

The Dinner and drinks are the same format as before. Chef Billy is cooking up some great barbecue chicken for dinner. Plates and utensils will all be there. Cash bar for those interested in beverages.

We racers are bringing the side dishes, salads, and dessert! Dazzle us with a great recipe. We do this to keep the cost down.

Who is invited? Everyone! Family and friends are welcome to come celebrate.

Is there limited seating? Definitely! We can only hold so many. Buy your tickets now to make sure you can get in. It is possible that we will run out (not likely, but it could happen).

Will there be tickets sold at the door? We might have room for a few more, but don't count on it. Buy tickets ahead of time.

What else is new?
For all you people who are connected with social media, we have a hash tag to go along with the events - #smwnr

Tweet about it to your friends. It should show on the main event page.

Video from 10/7

Well, we couldn't get any wind for the the last Wednesday Night. That's okay - was still had plenty of fun. Many of the boats came out in costume and we drifted around for a while enjoying the evening.

Remember that we have the Awards Party coming up on October 30th!

Oct 10, 2015

Fun Awards too!

One of the great things about our annual awards is that we get to recognize some of the crazy things we saw out there on the course (right along side the class winners).

And did we see some crazy stuff out there!

How about you? Did you see something worth noting? A competitor losing a sail bag overboard? A crew member unable to find his sea legs?

If you saw something that you think should be immortalized with an award of dubious distinction, just shoot us a note. Half the fun is remembering the things that made us laugh as we were racing around the course.

Remember - Awards are October 30th at 6pm!

Oct 8, 2015

Made it to 17!

Very good - we made it to 17 races. Not just a lot of wind last night, but that's okay. Everyone seemed to be having a good time anyway.

Before we wrap up this whole season, let's check to be sure that we have all the data correct. Look through the season standings and see if we recorded everything right for you.

Check out the season standings >using this link here<

Remember that we have a Big Party coming up give out all the awards! If you're reading this online, you have seen the announcement all season just to the right over there.

For you email people:

WNR Annual Awards
October 30th - 1800 first warning!
MRYC Commodore's Room

As before, the Club will provide some sort of main dish and we will bring all the sides and desserts. Cash bar with all your favorite tasty beverages.

We'll have more details soon, so don't stop reading emails now!

SMURF Results from 9/30

Well the race was pretty short, so not many changes in A class. B class, though!

Congratulations for Penniless and crew for a fast race! Good fun!

You can see all the SMURF results >here<

Results from 9/30

Sir Beaufort would count that race as a fresh breeze - It was a great night to be out there racing last night! There still isn't too much daylight, but we were able to get in a race. By keeping the race down to 3 miles, we were able to get everyone finished by 7pm. The wind and waves definitely make things more tricky, though.

Congratulations to Claiborne Ferry and crew for a fast race in A class. I think she had a reefed main for the entire race, but still did well. Also doing well was Hinesight and crew in the B class. Hinesight had full sails, but no chute. In fact, no one used a spinnaker last night. Congratulations to Don Elliott on Starstruck for a great job in the Star class too.

Remember to dress up next week!

MOB drill?

Did you do your Man Overboard Drill yet?  Only two weeks to get it done.

Once you do your drill, send me an email and I will score you as completing the MOB.

Here is a great video on how to do a proper man overboard drill from SailVision. (thanks SailVision) I'm not sure they're around anymore, but the video is still a good demonstration. For example, don't put a person in the water to drill - why not use a jug?

marshall.patterson@gmail.com

Why do a drill? Well, your job as a skipper is to show your crew that sailing is:

  • Fun - check
  • Rewarding - check
  • Safe - ...
What??! You didn't show your crew how to be safe yet? That's no good. Show your crew what to do is someone falls overboard. It happened to at least one boat this summer, so it could happen to you next.

As a bonus, I'll erase those extra points you have because your drill is not done yet. That could be a lot of points!

2015 Season after 16

The Season is progressing quite nicely! We have sweet 16 races in the bank and now we have just two more possible races to go. The race committee is working hard on the results.

Plenty of opportunity left to make some moves. There are many opportunities in A class to move around, B class has some possibilities, and the Star class could change too. The last two weeks could bring some fun.

You can see all the season standings >here<

Don't forget the last week is the race to dress up (or in costume) to win the coveted 'Best Dressed' award. How can you go wrong?!?

Video from 9/23

Interesting mark roundings and lots of great shots from the setting sun.

Not too many changes for the SMURF last night, but it all adds up to a SMURF season!

Results from 9/23

You've got to love fall on the Chesapeake! Cool evenings, reasonable winds, waterfowl moving through - Lots of fun to be on the water as the sun sets.

The winds died off slowly last night as the race proceeded allowing the rich to get richer,  but it was still great to be out there.  Our numbers are starting to dwindle a bit as we get late in the season, but there was still a respectable number of boats racing. A few more spectators too.

Congratulations to Kimber Rosswork and crew on the Viper 640. They took off on the first leg and lead everyone into the finish after. Congratulations to Don Elliott and crew on Starstruck too. The Star class had all kinds of position changes, but Don picked up a lead early and held on to it with everyone close on his tail. Congrats to Ful Dek as well - excellent racing as usual. An early lead kept them out of the fray at the first windward mark as four other boats jockeyed for second (including fun port-tack approaches!). The video is fun to watch.

Beautiful night out there last night (except for the wind part). Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy the evening!

I don't have  much time to talk about the races today, but congrats to all the winners. We noticed that all the winners were at the Club last night to get their nightly trophies. Very fun.

No video this week because I forgot the camera. Sorry about that. You will just have to take my word for it that I took the photo above!

We really lucked out that the rain held off until we were back at the dock. Some of those lightning strikes were pretty impressive! No good shots of the storm, but lots of the racers!

SMURF results for 9/9

All kinds of interesting changes for SMURF last night. It's fun to see the order changed up a bit and it's good to see that non-spin works in the SMURF ratings too.

Congratulations to Swagman for crushing the start and carrying it all the way through to a first place finish! Being short-handed didn't slow her down.

Results from 9/9

Thank goodness - we finally got some wind to have a race! Of course the looming storms made for a bit of an adventure as people sailed back from the Oak Creek mark. What' a little lightening between friends?

Congratulations to first place finishers: Claiborne Ferry, Ful Dek, and Tim's Boat. Great to see so many boats out for a potentially stormy night.

SMURF results for 8/5

It turns out that, if you put up five big honkin' sails, your boat will move pretty darn fast. Congratulations to Pagan for a very fast race finishing first in SMURF for class B.

Congrats to Claiborne Ferry for carrying over their fast race to a first place finish in Class A.

Results from 8/5 James H. Wilson RTI Race

It was a beautiful night out there last night. Plenty of wind up until the last half mile in the Miles to the finish and it wasn't all that hot for August. Mr. Jimmy would have loved to be out there on Boss II firing off his shotgun to start the races.

In typical Mr. Jimmy fashion, the race was just a bit quirky with a close reach out to Ashcraft to start the race. Eastern Bay was very choppy for only 8-10 knots of air and the current was just all kinds of squirrely around Herring Island, but the spin run back from Herring Island was lots of fun in the sunset. The first boat came across the Finish in just under 90 minutes.

Congratulations to Jim Ryan and crew on Ninotchka for an excellent race coming in first for the Stars. Many boats were right in behind her tracking her down including Ostinato and many other Stars.

Also Congratulations to the crew on Claiborne Ferry who had a fast race and managed to correct into first for the A class. She was able to keep just close enough to the Cal 40, Flyer, to correct over. Tough job with all the hot shots on Flyer.

And Congratulations to the crew of Ful Dek for their normal fast racing coming in first in the B class. She was so far over into the shallows entering the Wye River that we thought she must be aground. Not at all. She was able to handle the chop and even reel in several A class boats.

Thanks to all of you for coming out to enjoy our annual James H. Wilson Round the Island Race. Mr. Jimmy would be happy to see you racing!

Sailing Instructions for 8/5

It's a chart! It's the Sailing Instructions!

It's both. You should download and print the special sailing instructions for the 8/5 race now. You can get them >here<

What is important to remember:

  • Start at 5:45!
  • Six marks that are all turning marks
  • You can go clockwise, or counterclockwise around Herring Island
Get your SIs now! Print them and bring them with you.

Every year someone tells me that they didn't know that this week was the Jimmy Wilson race, that we start early, or that we have to honor R N"12". Help your friends out and be sure to tell them. Forward this to them so they know!

Video from 7/29

Remember! Next Wednesday is the Round the Island Race in memory of Mr. Jimmy.

The most important thing about the race is that the start is 20 minutes early compared to most Wednesdays. See you at the starting line at 5:45 pm.

In the mean time, here is the video from last Wednesday.

SMURF from 7/29

Lots of changes in SMURF last night!

Okay, record it in the record books - we had wind in late July. Who knew that could happen without a storm! The dog days are starting any minute.

Remember next week is the Round the Island Race.

Plenty of wind allowed us to have a longer course last night. At 5.8 miles, it was fun to stretch out the racing a bit. Congratulations to Ostinato, Ful Dek, and Patrick Penwell for fast racing last night to come in first in their classes. Great fun.

2015 Season after 10

That's right - 10 races in the bag! That means 2 throwouts.

Do you think we'll make 20 races? Remember that the Jimmy Wilson race (and early start) is on August 5th.

So it's mystery wind!  Southwest, then NW, then W, then back to the NW. Supposed to die, but it builds.

Well, it was a short race, but at least we got to go sailing. Congratulations to the crew of Javlin for a first in the A class.  Ful Dek in B class and Betty Ford in the Stars also did great coming in first.

Season after 8 races (and MOB)

So we have 8 races in so far. How are you doing?

Well, you can see all the season standings >here<

If you did a man overboard drill let me know and I will record it. If you did mark boat and I missed it, let me know that too.

It's easy for me to miss things, so check it now while it is still fresh in your mind. By the end of the season, you may not remember what you did.

Be sure to get those man overboard drills completed to get points off! I suggest using a cushion or some other floating item to test your skills. Have the skipper throw the cushion and let go of the helm. The crew should be able to make it back to the cushion on their own - right?

No Racing for 7/8

Well, some things you just don't want to see when you're trying to get on the water for a race. A line of storm clouds headed for St Michaels is definitely one to avoid!

We will just have to try for next week.

Of course cancelling means the storms will miss us now.

Once again, the A class did not see much change with the SMURF ratings, but B class - Wow!

Congratulations to Taaris for a fast night! A 2-minute lead is nothing to sneeze at.

You can see all the SMURF results >here<

Results from 6/10

That was a fun race last night! Warm, sunny, and the wind wasn't too crazy. The short course with several legs made for some interesting sailing, although the winds are switching around to the Southwest, so we can expect lighter winds and hotter temps. I guess summer is here.

Congratulations to Ostinato in the A class for a first place finish. Even short legs doesn't seem to slow her down. We had a new boat out on the course for the A class last night too - Chauntecler. Welcome! She looks like she could be fast.

Congrats also to Ful Dek in the B class and to Wish in the Stars. Great sailing for first place finishes. Taaris seems to be a trouble maker now coming in second in B class. Not to be discounted as troublemakers, the Star class had lots of fun at the start with the shifty winds. Should be a fun video once it renders.

SMURF results from 6/3

In the SMURF, Ostinato was able to hold on to her lead of 3 seconds, but big changes in the B class. Moonraker seems to have found her point of sail coming in a whopping 4 minutes in the lead corrected!

Congratulations to everyone who came out and braved the storm warnings. Turned out to be nothing.

People often ask what site I use for storm prediction. My choice is http://www.intellicast.com/, but they are all good.

Results from 6/3

What's with this stormy weather? Last week was cancelled for storms and this week was just cold and wet. At least there was wind!

Congratulations to Ostinato for a fast race. She managed to stay ahead and correct just 3 seconds over Redbeard racing non-spin behind her. Lots of fast sailing in B class too with Ful Dek coming in 1st again. Measuring in at 7.126 nm, this was our longest course. That's as long as the Jimmy Wilson race.

The Star class has lots of interesting shifts in the wind and the order on the short course. Congratulations to Mike Keene and John Jenkins for a fast race.

Mark Boat 2015 - creative solutions needed

Hi sailors and friends!

A hearty thanks to the few of you who have proactively signed up for mark boat duty on our sign-up page (link below).

Bowie Rose, long-standing supporter of WNR, is taking some time away from these duties and will not be the boat and mark boat captain as he has in the past.

This means that for WNR mark boat duty, we need crew who can operate loaner boats (CBMM has graciously offered the use of a carolina skiff, and the MYRC Junior Sail Program has options), or who have access to / can provide a powerboat.

Please help us think of a way to ensure our WNR series keeps thriving! Send your thoughts and creative suggestions to me at sailinggal71@gmail.com.

WNR Mark Boat Signup Page

PS - We have 2 crew ready & willing for this Weds June 3. They just need a boat/driver!

SMURF results from 5/20

No changes in A class for this week compared to the regular ratings, but B class had some movement. Just all kinds of changes!

Congratulations to Taaris and her crew for correcting well into first. They seem to be getting faster and faster each week. Keep up the good work.

Results from 5/20

Great night again! Great wind, cool temps, cool sunset, fun awards at the Club. I hope you're getting out there on the water this time of year. Once August gets here, you will be wishing for nights like last night!

Looks like Claiborne Ferry and her crew has figured out how to make that J/30 go. After a smart race, she managed to finish well into first place again. A 3-minute corrected lead is pretty good. A class will have fun trying to reel them in.

Ful Dek and her crew had a great night last night. Lots of good spinnaker work downwind was fun to watch. That trip out to Oak Creek was not quite downwind, but it was a good chance to work on some good downwind angles.

Lots of fun in the wind for the Star class as well. We had Bob Flower come over to say hello to us on the RC just before the sequence. It's always nice to have friends come visit, but maybe not so close next time. After resetting the anchor, we got the Stars off to an aggressive start with everyone crowding the line. Jim Ryan cleared his air and had a great race to some in first. With legs just over 1 mile for the Stars, it was like a weekend race.

SMURF results for 5/13

The A class ended up finishing the same in SMURF as in the regular PHRF, but the B class had some mixing up. Congratulations to Taaris and her crew for hanging in there to get second! That non-spin helped them considerably.

You can check out all the SMURF results >HERE<

Results from 5/13

It was a great night out there last night with plenty of air and nice cool temperatures. Unfortunately, you also need some water to go sailing. It seemed like someone pulled the drain plug on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday leaving many of the boats hard aground in their slips for the evening. Strong winds from the north has it's drawbacks too.

Those who could make it out had a great time. Given the festivities back at the Club after the race, I think those who could not make it out to race also had a great time!

As usual, the wind was squirrely at the start. That's what we get for racing in the evening. There was a little trouble with OCS for a couple of the starts, but it all managed to work itself out.

Congratulations to John Hines and crew on Hinesight for very fast night. Not only did they get line honors, but they crushed the class finishing correcting 5 minutes over the class. Claiborne Ferry and her crew also had a great night correcting over Ostinato by 36 seconds. It's always hard to race the watch. Also looking great was Tim Paris driving the Star Tim's Boat to a first. Great job in the heavy air.

Barging and more barging

That darn wind just kept clocking to the south as we tried to get the starts off. That means the committee boat was more and more favored as the classes came up.

So what are the rules that apply for barging?

Well, RRS 11, 14, 16.1, sometimes 2, and the worst of it all is that dang preamble to section C. Is it easy to understand? Nope. What we need is some sort of expert on the racing rules who can make nice animated drawings to explain it to all of us.

Oh, wait - Jos Spijkerman did that for us.

Thanks Jos!

So is Blue right or wrong?

SMURF results from 5/6

Oh yes, we didn't forget about SMURF.

SMURF - that is Saint Michaels Unifying Rating Formula.

The A class did about the same last night in SMURF, but the B class had all kinds of changes. Congratulations to the crew on Taaris for a very fast race - she had a whopping lead at the finish. Glad to see that Thunderbirds are still fast on the course. Moonraker also had a great night correcting over several boats to come in second.

You can see all the SMURF results >HERE<

If you forgot how SMURF works, you can read up >HERE<

Results from 5/6

We started with some light air out of the North, but we didn't even get marks set before a big breeze filled in from the SE making for some quick movement to get the races off on time. Quick pick up the marks and head to the harbor for an upwind leg to Gibson Flats. We just barely got on station as the sequence started.

Plenty of wind for the start and the race. We started with about 12 knots and it held reasonably constant over the race. As the sun set, it pulled some of the wind out, but we still had plenty to finish everyone. With a course distance just over 5 miles and 6 legs to the courses for PHRF, there was plenty of activity. Not bad for the first race of the year.

2015 seems to be bringing out new boats for the PHRF classes. We had two  more boats in A this week and we anticipate a couple more in B class as the season goes on. It's good to see lots of competition in A class.

Congratulations to the Inn at Perry Cabin and the crew on Starbright. It appears the conditions were just right for her this Wednesday. Lots of reaching may make this a formidable boat. Also looking good was Ful Dek and her crew making a great recovery after a shaky start and Lil' Buddy who seemed to lead form wire to wire.

See all the results >HERE<

Next week more boats and more fun!

May 4, 2015

Mark boats and crew needed!

We hope everyone is looking forward to this Wednesday! In order to make WNR successful, we need everyone's help with mark boat duties.

For the immediate future, we need a mark boat AND crew, as Bowie Rose, our staunch supporter in past years, is taking some time off from mark boat duties. This Weds May 6, Mariana will be covering, but we need boats and crew for future Wednesdays.

Please go to our online sign-up sheet to pick your preferred Weds. We'll monitor signup progress and then eventually will assign people.

Sailing Instructions posted!

That's right - The season starts in just two weeks. Are you ready?

We didn't make any major changes to the sailing instructions for this year, but it is always good to read through them to be sure you understand all the instructions.

What might you have missed?

  • did you know you could be penalized for interfering with another class start?
  • did you know that PHRF boats are required to use running lights after dark?
  • did you know that you need to inform the RC if you are changing sail numbers?
Here are the Sailing Instructions. Just click >here < to get them.

It's definitely time to register. If you haven't registered yet, there are links on the right that will give you the correct forms.

See you soon!
