Results from the year

I've been working on the entire season results, so let me know what you think.

You can see all the results >HERE<

What should you check? Well, I'm just doing this by hand, so:

  • If you did mark boat, be sure I didn't mark you DNS by accident
  • Make sure your points match what you expect for individual races
  • Make sure I didn't throw out the wrong race
  • Make sure the math is correct
I really did try to check this and it all seems good.

Some things that might help you understand this crazy spreadsheet:
  1. We have one throwout per series. There were three series (Spring, Summer, Fall) and there is one per.
  2. The mark boat averages also are by series (not the whole season).
  3. If you did mark boat, I gave you an average for the races where you competed (not throwouts).
  4. If you did mark boat and you also competed that evening, you get your competition score (not an average even if the average would be better).
  5. If someone did not compete at all in a series, you will see "DNCS" meaning did not compete for the series. These boats do not count for DNC totals for most boats. They were basically not there, but we have to give them some number of points.
  6. 6/20 was a crazy night. The zeros are there to remind me.
  7. If a boat raced less than 4 races, they are not in the season results. They will be in the series results. This is not normally an issue, but A Class will notice some weirdness in the summer due to this.
Great fun this summer! Be sure I have the correct info before we start making trophies!

Mark Boat for 10/3

We could still use some help on mark boat for 10/3. Are you available to help?

Tide changes and the wind dies. Man, I hate it when that happens! At least the predicted storms held off until 9 pm.

We actually chose the course last night knowing that the wind might die out and that we may need to shorten, so there were lots of marks for the PHRF boats.  As high tide approached, we watched boats round their first leeward mark and then nothing. Rarely does the wind drop out so fast! Thanks to everyone for sticking it out and trying to finish.

Congratulations to Bob Foley and crew on La Quatrieme for a first-place finish last night! Also having a great night was John Shannahan and crew in the Stars as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek, both groups coming in first.

You can see all the results >here<

Remember that next week is the best-dressed contest! (and the last race of the year). See you out there.

Hi Everyone,

Finally, we get in a race! Even then, the wind dropped out. At least there were no hurricanes or heat warnings.

Congratulations to Janet Schilling and crew on Penniless for a great sail last night coming in first. Also having a great night was Mike Kabler and crew on Javelin as well as Jim Ryan and Andrew Devlin in the Stars.

Only two more weeks!

Need more Mark Boat signups!

Ack!

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a48a4aa2caafc1-20181

We need people to sign up for mark boar for the last 5 weeks of the season. If you haven't done mark boat yet, you need to sign up! Who should we pick on?

Ful Dek - Sure, you're winning. How about doing mark boat for an evening?
Maddie - You could put on a shirt and do mark boat.
Wish - You usually do mark boat once a year.
Ella - Just think - you could do mark boat and give bad advice there for an evening.

It's great fun on the Race Committee:

  • You see all the wind shifts first
  • You get to comment on every blown cover and mark rounding
  • Spinnaker sets are easy on RC
  • You can bring snacks
  • and it's easier to put the boat away!
Remember - you like marks. Sometimes you have to put them out.

Results from 8/29

That was probably the hottest night of the year, but we somehow still had some wind. If you managed to stay hydrated, you could probably stay cool. That is, except for the downwind legs!

The wind was a bit more than last week, so we tried a longer course. At 4.8 nm, the race managed to last just past sunset. Maybe the evenings will start to cool off from here.

Remember next week we start 20 minutes earlier. The Star warning will be at 5:45 PM.

Congratulations to the crew on Javelin for coming in first in A class last night. I think the crew was Mike, John, and Tom?  Also having a fast night was Ful Dek coming in first in B class as well as the mystery Star 8279.

Sorry, I forgot to post the results again!

Congratulations to Matt and Eric on Maddie in the Stars, Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato, and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful. Dek for first place finishes!

They predicted that the wind would be light and squirrely. Turns out they were right. We were able to race, but the wind was dropping fast as the evening went on. Sorry that not everyone could finish!

The light and unpredictable winds did allow for some crazy racing. There were all kinds of interactions in the Star class that we managed to catch on film. Fortunately, there did not appear to be any major trading of paint.

Congratulations to the winners last night: Jim Ryan and Andrew Devlin in the Stars, Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato, and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek!

Congrats to all the guest skippers.  First Star guest skipper was Carl Langkammerer, the first guest A class was Bradley Adam, and first guest B class was John Volatile.

Tomorrow is Guest Skipper

Don't forget that tomorrow night is Guest Skipper Night. We will not be counting the race for the overall season standings.

We'd love to know who is the guest skipper on your boat. Be sure to send us an email, or let us know on the water. The coveted "Blind Squirrel" Award is up for grabs!

Jimmy Wilson Round the Island Race!

Nice wind for a fun race!  I know we had a great time on the race committee following the fleets, I hope you all had a great time out there last night too.

Congratulations to everyone who came out to sail and remember Mr. Jimmy. Special congrats to Doug Abbott, Tad duPont, and crew on Flyer for a first-place finish in the A class. We only occasionally see Flyer, but it's always fun. Also, congrats go to Tim Paris and Tim Godlee for a first in the Star class as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek for a first in B class!

Great Job - Mr. Jimmy would be happy.

SI for Round the Island Race

It's time for the James H. Wilson Round the Island Race!

Wednesday, August 1st - We start early.

What do you need to know?

  • Be Early - we are starting 20 minutes earlier than normal
  • Where to go - look at the chart and go to the correct marks
It's easy. We'll be out there early and we will start early. The warning for the Star class will be at 5:45 PM, so just do everything 20 minutes earlier than usual. All you need to do is sail out the channel, go around the island, and then sail back through the channel.

Special trophies for this special regatta! You could get silver for just one race.

Be sure to download, print, and bring with you the special sailing instructions >HERE<

2018 Jimmy Wilson race

Don't forget this coming Wednesday, August 1st, is the Jimmy Wilson Round the Island Race!

It's a longer race too. We have a longer time limit.

More tomorrow.

Results from 7/18

Once again we have a great night of wind for a Wednesday in July. Better play the lottery.

Congratulations to Bucky Buchanan and Bradley Adam on Aunt Evelyn in the Star class last night for some fast sailing coming in first! Also having a great night last night was Willen Rosenburg and crew on Javelin as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek.

Great racing! Let's hope this luck continues!

Oh man! I forgot to post the results. No excuses. Sorry about that.

It was a beautiful night for sailing last Wednesday. Congratulations to Janet Schilling and crew on Penniless, Willem Roosenburg and crew on Javelin, and (if my memory serves) Patrick Penwell and Matt Rajachch on Maddie for first-place finishes!

No racing on July 4th

That's right - No racing on July 4th.

Stay home tomorrow and enjoy fireworks of your own devices. Tasty beverages provided by that refrigerator in the kitchen.

See you on the 11th.

It's Back!

Well, that mysterious Scotland mark has returned!

Now we can use the "E" mark again. Not that we go out there a lot, but it is nice to have. I know that we will definitely use it for the Round the Island race.

I'm glad there is less of a chance of hitting the mark now.

Yea Coast Guard!

Remember - no racing on July 4th

What a nice windy night last night. Who would think that we could have wind this time of year! Congratulations to everyone who braved the 20 knots of wind and came out for a race. I think everyone who was there had a good time. It was great to see all the boats flying around the course.

Congratulations to Tim Godlee and Tim Paris on Tim's Boat for a first-place finish. With legs of the course just over a mile, the Stars were able to get in a nice race.  The PHRF classes also had a nice course with the total length of just over 6 and a half miles. Congratulations to Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek for first place finishes.

Remember - no racing on July 4th

Jun 14, 2018

Results from 6/13

It turns out all those small craft warnings were just talk. The winds we were seeing at noon died down to a quite reasonable night! Still plenty of wind (and humidity) for a race. The winds were from the southwest which usually makes for some very short windward legs. That definitely was the issue last night as well. We went for 3 laps in the Star class just to get a race that was about an hour long.

Still plenty of fun to be had. We saw some great long runs from Oak Creek all the way down to Deep Water Point. The Stars also had plenty of mark roundings and interesting windward legs. I think everyone was finished by 8pm!

Congratulations to Tom Price and crew on Bop in the Star class for a first-place finish last night. I think they were able to keep the other competitors covered and lead the last two legs. Also having a great night and finishing first was Willem Roosenburg and crew on Javelin as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek.

Spring Series so far

It looks like we might get one more race in the spring series.

Good times!

It appears it was dead battery night for Wednesday Night this week. Not only did Bowie's boat end up with a dead battery, but pretty much every battery on the RC boat died too. There was speculation that solar flares were the culprit, but I suspect bad luck was involved.

Never the less, we were able to get a race in last night after some delay. The wind pretended like it was going to cooperate, but it was Wednesday Night. We haven't seen the wind cooperate yet, so crazy wind shifts are the norm. That good 90º shift was a surprise, though!

Congratulations to Jake Flory and crew on Claiborne Too Ferry coming out for the first night of the season and finishing first! Also having a great night finishing first was Patrick Penwell and crew on the Star Maddie and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek.

Still need Mark Boat help!

Yes, tomorrow's mark boat is looking pretty lonely. We need someone to sign up and help with mark boat tomorrow.

Good candidates are the people who got a trophy last year. I'm looking at you:
Jim Ryan
Ful Dek

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a48a4aa2caafc1-20181

If there is a week when you cannot sail for lack of crew, then mark boat is a good option. Not only do you get an average score instead of a DNC, but you get to help out your fellow boaters!

May 31, 2018

Results from 5/30

I guess now is the time when we get the spring winds! That's okay. We'll take good wind when we can get it. I'm glad the wind held off long enough and we could easily complete the races last night.

Congratulations to Jim Ryan and Andrew Devlin for a first place in the Stars. Also, congrats go to Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek for first place finishes. Lots of great racing out there last night!

You can see all the results >HERE<

We still need mark boat people for the next three weeks. Sign up now!

Results from 5/23

Yeah! Great night for racing!

Just a little excitement getting everyone started. We counted about 6 of the 9 Star boats as over early. I guess aggressive starts are good, but wow! I don't want to buy an I and Z flag, but I guess I may need to do it. At least the second start was clean.

Congratulations to Patrick Penwell and crew sailing Tim's Boat for a first-place finish in the Stars. Also having a fast night was Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek. The A class was particularly tight last night with the top 3 boats finishing corrected within 17 seconds. Fun to watch!

You can see all the results >HERE<

Let's hope for more spring winds!

May 14, 2018

Underwater Obstruction

FYI

There is a report of an underwater obstruction near the R"12" mark that we call E (outside Deep Water Point). Take care to stay in the channel if you are in transit near the mark.

As you can imagine, we will not be using it until it's known the obstruction is gone.

Another great night to be on the water - now we just have to work on some wind!

It was predicted that the wind would drop down to about 4 knots as the evening went, but it appeared that SE winds that clock to the West pretty much always drop out completely. We were able to get the Stars finished with wind, but then it started fading fast. Sorry to those few boats that couldn't make it.

Congratulations to Tim Godlee and Tim Paris in Tim's Boat for a first place in the Stars. With the wind changing through the race, there was a constant need to change strategy. Also, congratulations to Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato and well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek for first place finishes.

You can see all the results >HERE<

You can also see some minor corrections to last week >here<

Do you have a new PHRF rating? We're using the Circular Random ratings in Wednesday Night Racing this year. It more closely matches our racing style. If you have a new rating, send it to us.

Results from 5/2 - Second try

Okay, I'm figuring out how to use Excel again. Apparently, it's not like riding a bike - I can forget what I knew about using Excel. I think this version is a bit more readable and closer matches what you've seen in our results in the past.

I also made an error copying the data from the scratch sheets to the results. We wrote down the time for ReJoyce correctly but I read the wrong line when entering it into the results. Sorry about that, ReJoyce!

You can see the new results >HERE<

As usual, make sure the results make sense to you. We're only human on the RC.

Results form 5/2

Yeah! what a great night of racing!

At first, it seemed as if the course might be short with the puffs coming through the starting line, but the wind calmed down to the predictions and we have quite a pleasant evening. Everyone got in before sunset and it wasn't all that cold for May racing.

Congratulations to Jonathan Clarke and crew in the new unnamed Etchells out there last night. They sailed a fast race and came in first for the A class. Pretty good for a first night! We're guessing their PHRF rating is 123. Also having a great night was Jim Ryan and Andrew Devlin in the Stars and well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek.

You can see all the results >HERE<

I'm working on a new scoring system (converting to Excel), so don't beat me up if you find an error. Just let me know and we'll fix it.

Mark Boat and one week to go!

So the countdown starts!

There is one week until the first race. How is your boat setup coming along? Feeling confident in racing on May 2?

If you want to know about times and the process, it's all in the Sailing Instructions.

One thing that helps make Wednesday Night racing work is Mark Boat duty! If you or your crew can take one week to help with setting marks, we will be set for the year. Just sign up to help one of the Wednesdays over the summer.

What do you need? Just 1-2 people and a willingness to help. There is some lifting and you might get wet from the anchor lines, but it is pretty low-impact. If you work on the mark boat instead of racing, we'll even give you an average score. That should make it very painless!

You can sign up for mark boat duty >HERE<

Do you know your boat will miss a week for vacations? That might be a great week go get crew to volunteer in the mark boat!

Did you win an award last year? I'm looking for you to sign up first!

2018 Sailing Instructions

They're Out!

You can download the Sailing Instructions >HERE<

What's new? Not too much. Star boats have almost exactly the same rules. For PHRF, there is a slight change to the non-spin rule and a clarification about how to protest.

You can see what has changed in the SI by looking for the vertical bar on the right. Any area with a change is marked by a vertical bar.

What are some good things to take away from the SI?

  • Get there on time - we can't wait for you. There is only so much daylight available.
  • Listen to VHF 78 - we make announcements.
  • Call the hotline at 410-745-4983 - We will leave messages every week. If you think there is an issue with the weather, just call the hotline to find out what the RC thinks about racing.
  • We're not racing on July 4th - that's right, we're not racing on July 4th
  • Stay clear until 5 minutes to your start - From 5 minutes until your start, the starting line is yours. Before or after that, it's not; get away.
  • Once you declare non-spin, you're non-spin - no take backs!
  • If you're using equipment (sails, boat) that is not yours, let us know - it's not as obvious as you think it is. Come on by and tell us; we don't bite! (well, Tim does, but he has his rabies shots so you'll be okay).

Only two weeks to go for the first race!
