Well, the wind wasn't what was promised, but we made up for it with a strong current! Nothing could be more fun than fighting the incoming tide to make it to Deep Water Point.

At least it was a cool night with a nice sunset.

Thanks to the log canoes for coming out.  It was fun to see three on the starting line. It was also great to see other competitors come out to race for the evening. When did we last see Roger race the Lightning?

Thanks for coming out to remember Mr Jimmy.

Round the Island Race on September 2nd

Yay! September 2nd is the James H Wilson Round the Island Race. It's our annual crazy race when we remember Jimmy Wilson.

We race out of the Miles River, sail around Herring Island either direction, and then back to the finish. It's usually about 6.5 nm. The starting line is perpendicular to the course to the first mark. That means we're likely going to have a reaching or downwind start.

There will be log canoes out there starting with the cruising class. They are generally less maneuverable than you, so be nice. They are in their own class, so there is no reason to crush them at the start.

There are special sailing instructions. You can see the sailing instructions here:

What is up with this crazy race?!? Well, Fun. This is supposed to be a fun race in a different format. This race also has a long history with the log canoe fleet (it used to be called the Bigelow Cup) and with CBYRA. Mr. Jimmy loved this race and ran it every year for a long time. There are special trophies for this race.

We all miss racing against Mr. Jimmy, so we run this race in his memory. Come out to have fun! We might see some other competitors who typically do not come out for Wednesday nights. It's all good. New boats and log canoes mean lots of people who don't understand the rules like you do. Breathe deep and sail fast.

Fall is here - we're starting earlier

That's right! We start races earlier after September 1st - 20 minutes earlier!

The starts are earlier - you should leave the dock earlier - you should leave work earlier!

Every Wednesday Night Race from now to October.

Who would do that? Well, we're running out of daylight. We need the time to get in a race. We try to finish everyone before sunset, but sometimes it doesn't work. Remember to use running lights after sunset.

We talk all about this change in the SIs:

September 2nd is the Jimmy Wilson Race. There are special sailing instructions for the race. You can see them here:

No racing 7/1

Remember folks - there is no racing on July 1st.

I think it's a good time to do a practice run on your grill game. No 4th of July is perfect without a properly grilled hamburger. You'd better start practicing!

Yay! We got one in the books.

Nice racing last night. A beautiful spring evening with some wind - how could you go wrong?

Congratulations to the people who made it out last night. Our season is underway. You can see the results here:

A word on points and scoring:
The results on Nextsailor are good for the evening, but it doesn't correctly count the points for DNS, DNF, throwouts, or mark boat. To get the correct season results, you need to look at the Season Results spreadsheet. This spreadsheet doesn't make much sense with one race, but it works as we go further into the season.

Hotline

Bad weather outside for racing? Are we going to race?

Call the Hotline!

410-745-4983

Store the number in your phone.

Every Wednesday, sometime around 2 pm, I record a message on the hotline to tell you about the evening's racing. If it's nice out, I'll tell you the start times. If it's questionable, I'll tell you when I will make the call.

These are signals off the water. There are no changes to the hotline when it's closer than 45 minutes to the first start. Any signals after that will be on the water.

Happy Star Wars Day.

Time to register

It's time to register for Wednesday Night Racing for 2026!

You can register here

Remember that you get three nights for free (come out and try racing with us!), but we stop scoring you after that.

If you want to be eligible for trophies, you need to have a 2025 or 2026 EZ certificate, or you need to be a Star in the MES fleet.

Get a certificate here

Did you know the Star boats got an EZ certificate? Yep! We know their ratings just like we want to know yours!

Sign up for Mark Boat duty

Now is the time to sign up for Mark Boat.

Is there a week when you would prefer to do mark boat duty? Sign up now to get your pick!

Sign up here:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A48A4AA2CAAFC1-63176455-2026#/

Mark Boat helps us run great races, so we need your help. When you serve on the Mark Boat, your boat gets an average score for the race, so there is no penalty. If you received an award last year, or if you have sailed with us for several years, you need to sign up. If you wait, I will assign you a week. Sign up now to get your pick!

People often say, "I don't have a boat to use for mark boat." Yes, you do. I see you out there every week in a boat. That boat is good enough for setting marks. You will be fine!

Family, friends, and crew can all do mark boat. If you can operate a boat, you can do mark boat. We always help you from the committee boat.
