Results from 10/4

Yeah, we made it through the season!

Congratulations to everyone who came out last night dressed up. It was fun to see!

In the racing part of the evening, we had some great results too. Congratulations to Tim Paris and Corbin Penwell on Tim's Boat for a first place. Also congratulations to Bob Foley and crew on La Quatrieme as well as Janet Shilling and crew on Penniless for first place finishes.

We had to shorten course for the Stars last night to get everyone back to the dock with light. The PHRF boats had a rather short course to start, but even then it was hard to get everyone in with light. Darn, that sun!

You can see all the results >here<

Now we are planning for awards! Remember the Awards Party is planned for October 27th at 6pm. Mark your calendars now.

Oct 2, 2017

one last week!

That's right, there is one last Wednesday to get in a good race before the long winter.

As tradition goes, the last race of the season is when we judge the "Best Dressed" award for the year. The best dressed could bean the best-dressed boat, the best-dressed crew, or even the crew with the best costumes. We love the costume entries on the Committee Boat!

What do you win?

Well, there is an ill-fitting plaid jacket. But it's really about the admiration of your fellow sailors on how clever you can be. Good fun. Hope you can participate!

Of course, this is the last chance to make a change in the season standings! You can see all the results >here<

Now is a good time to look for errors in the season standings. Do you see something wrong? I could mess up several things to check:

  • Is each finish recorded correctly?
  • Did you do Mark Boat and it's recorded correctly?
  • Is the math right?

I can make mistakes when translating from one sheet to another, so let me know if there is a problem. I can fix it now, but it is hard to do after I hand out awards!

Remember the Awards party is on October 27th at 6pm

This is how it works, folks. Bowie can't do it all.

Nice race last night. Sorry, we went longer than I was expecting. It was nice to see the sunset out there, but I was not expecting to see the twilight. Congratulations to Tim's Boat, La Quatrieme, and Penniless for great races!

Remember next week is the Best Dressed race. The Race Committee is watching to see who dresses their boat or themselves the best for our annual award. Why not try out those great Halloween costumes!

Great night!

Gotta love those sunsets.

Congratulations to Steve Haarstick and Rowan Perkins on No Bozos for coming in first in the Star class. I think this was Steve's first win for the night. Also sailing fast out there to come in first was Ostinato in the A class and Ful Dek in the B class.

Great to see everyone out there last night!

Aug 31, 2017

Results from 8/30

Driving over Oak Creek bridge at 4 pm, I sure didn't think we were going to get a race in. At least it was a nice temperature. If we were going to drift around, it would be comfortable.

Turns out I was wrong. Not that there was some wind, but there was enough to move the boats. I sure hate to cancel three races in a row, so it was nice to get in a race. Shifty and light, but it was wind!

Congratulations to Bucky Buchanan and crew on Aunt Evelyn for a first place finish. That was Bucky's first first! Also having a great night was Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato as well as Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek. Great job in the light air!

It's quite simple

Remember we start early in September. On 9/6, we will start at 5:45.

Aug 24, 2017

No racing - but 7/19 video

Let's hope we're not starting a trend here.

We almost had enough wind, but it just would not fill in across the course. After we gave up, the wind completely died out, so I guess it was good that we didn't try. I hate to be floating out there for hours hoping for something to happen.

Well, let's look at a video again. This one is from 7/19.

Aug 19, 2017

Video from 7/12

Let's do another video since this is a slow week!

Here is the video from 7/12

Aug 17, 2017

No racing - but a 7/5 video

Well, we couldn't get in any racing last night for lack of wind, but at least we could watch a video from the past.

Here is the video from July 7th. Remember those days with wind on the course!

Aug 10, 2017

Results from 8/9

It was guest skipper night!

It was pretty light wind out there, so we chose a 3.1 mile course just so we could get the race finished in a reasonable time. It turned out that most everyone could finish. It sure seemed like we would finish quickly, but that darn wind fell out making it challenging for everyone.

Sailing fast coming in first in the Star class was Sewall Cox with Jim Ryan are crew. Also sailing fast coming in first was Jay Tyson and crew on La Quatrieme as well as Mike Rajachch and crew on Ful Dek.

Great sailing!

Guest Skipper Night

Remember that Wednesday is the Guest Skipper Night.

Same times and format for courses - just guest skippers at the helm of many boats. Find a friend who has always wanted to try out the helm of your boat and trade for the evening. Mix up crew; change skippers; bring out a different boat - Just an evening of fun. Of course, the winner gets the Blind Squirrel award.

This race does not count towards high point.

Interested in the summer series results? You can see them >here< This link is always the same, btw.

We also need a mark boat for the upcoming weeks. You can sign up for mark boat >here<

Boats that still need to sign up for mark boat are:
Maddie
Starstruck
7970
Javelin
La Quatrieme
Claiborne Too Ferry
Tarris
Swagman

Eight weeks left - Eight boats that need to do mark boat. Sign up now to get your preferred week.

That was a nice race for the James H Wilson Round the Island Race! All the good stuff we look for in a race:

  • reasonable winds
  • Cool temps
  • Interaction between boats
  • Whacky current to figure out
  • Last minute wind shifts
  • Light show to the north
  • Everyone safely in port by 8pm!

I think Mr. Jimmy would be happy to see everyone out there racing last night. Everyone was having a great time.

Congratulations to Dennis Glackin and crew on ReJoyce for a fast race coming in first the A class. Also having a great race coming in first was Jim Ryan and Sewall Cox in the Stars and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek. Great job everyone!

Starting early tomorrow!

It's a long race, so we're starting early. 20 minutes earlier than normal.

Here are the Sailing Instructions

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxO695y1tRgqOWlNM3JLdHE2Qmc

You will notice that this is a course sheet too. Print it and bring it with you. STAR sailors - you too!

The first leg might be upwind. It might also be off the wind. Make sure you honor those three marks as you go out the river and as you come back into the river. Clockwise or counterclockwise around the island is fine! Fun times in the current.

See you out there for the first warning at 5:45 PM.

Jul 27, 2017

Results from 7/26

Great wind last night! The forecast was showing that we might have 5-6, but we had much more. I was seeing gusts around 12-15 with a reasonably steady 10 knots. That let us set a nice long course of 7.7 nm out to the Oak Creek mark and back. We'll probably have a long race next week, but the days are definitely getting shorter. Quick races will be the order for the rest of the season.

Congratulations to Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato for a very fast race. That big Asym really makes a difference on the long reaches. Also looking great and coming in first was Jim Ryan and crew in the stars and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek. Great job!

Remember that the Jimmy Wilson Round the Island Race is next week. We start 20 minutes earlier. Stars warning is 5:45 PM.

Result of Protest from 7/12

Hi Everyone,

Here are the results of the protest from 7/12. We do not normally post the findings, but Jeff asked to have it posted. Since he is the protestee, I suppose that's okay.

This protest is related to SI rule 15 for how a boat can get a 10% bonus for declaring non-spin. This is also related to the new amendment to the SI for the same rule.

You can read it >HERE<

Jul 20, 2017

Results from 7/19

That was a nice little race last night. The wind was trying to cause trouble, but it held in there. It was great to see the Star boats staying close and competitive all race and the PHRF boats had plenty of reaches to keep them working!

Congratulations to Willem Rosenberg and crew on Javlin for correcting up to first on A class. Also having a great night was Jim Ryan and crew in the Stars and Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek.

Amendment to the Sailing Instructions

Hi Everyone,

It turns out "no simple rule will go unpunished". We've had a handicap adjustment rule on the books for many years (probably since the late 80s) so that people could choose to race without a spinnaker and still be competitive. After last week's protest, it was requested that we change the rule to make it clearer what you could do and when.

Changing rules is never easy. We are posting an amendment to the Sailing Instructions with the change explained in detail. This new rule will go into effect August 2nd, 5:45 p.m.

You can see the amendment to the SI here  >HERE<

The change is basically this: The decision to get a handicap adjustment for non-spin must be made before the starting sequences. After the starting sequences, you cannot change your mind.

We are talking about these changes with the Steering Committee and may have an additional revision this year, or next year. We are also noting that we are losing competitors because of this rule. If additional changes are needed, we'll let you know.

If you have any thoughts or comments you want to share on the topic, feel free to use the comment section below.

Now we're getting caught up! That darn 4th of July holiday is really putting a crimp into my production schedule.

I can't believe there was enough wind to race on Wednesday! It looked like it was going to die out several times, but it managed to come back each time giving us just enough wind to have a race. That was good news for Alan Campbell and crew in the Stars as well as John Hines and crew on Hinesight and Willem Rosenberg and crew on Javlin. All came in first in the light air!

Need mark boat help

Yes, we do!

We need help with the mark boat on Wednesday the 5th as well as other dates. You could sign up online, or send me an email to let me know you are helping:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a48a4aa2caafc1-20171

Yes, we're racing on the 5th! We race every Wednesday between May 3rd and October 4th. I'm not sure how the miscommunication started, but we race on the 5th.

I really need help each week with mark boat. Bowie is doing a great job running the boat, but he needs able-bodied help. If you competed last year, you should be doing mark boat this year. If you ever received a first or received a trophy, you REALLY need to do mark boat once a year. Sign up now and I won't pester you.

While you are thinking about that, here is the video from last week.

Jun 29, 2017

Results from 6/28

Last night we got the low humidity and the cool temps for sailing. Steady winds blowing 10 knots is something we'll just have to wait for next time. It sure was a nice night to be out there, but that wind was really unpredictable! We were expecting it to die out at any minute, so we set a short course with lots of turning marks.

Congratulations to all the Star sailors who made it out last night. It was no small effort to launch with a broken hoist. Good job remaining calm and working through it. There is still a long way to go, but at least there is a workable solution to get everyone on the water!

Coming in first last night was Dennis Glackin and crew on ReJoyce, Jeff Pevey and crew on Ful Dek, and Jim Ryan Ryan and crew in the Stars. Congratulations for some fast racing! Fluky winds made it quite tricky.

Results from 6/21

Summer started with some fluky air! Crazy puffs; big headers and lifts; lulls that seemed to stand the boat up: We went for all the variables. But that didn't mean we couldn't get in a nice long race. At 5.4 nm for the PHRF boats, we definitely got to sail. Not bad for summer.

Congratulations to Mike Keene and John Jenkins on Betty Ford for a first place finish. Also doing fantastic was Janet Schilling and crew on Penniless and Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato.

You can see all the results >HERE<

Remember that we need help with mark boat over the summer and fall. If you know you can't sail one week, maybe your crew can help out with mark boat and save some points! Sign up here:

Yeah Wind!

That was a nice night. I was afraid that it would be hot, but the wind made it quite pleasant. At 5.4 nm, we were able to get in plenty of sailing. We even had a second spin set for the PHRF boats. Good fun!

Congratulations to Willem Rosenberg and crew on Javlin for coming out his first night of the season and getting a win. There is a rumor that he may have had a couple novice sailors on the boat too. Also getting a first was Jay Tyson and crew on Tarris as well as Jim Ryan and crew for first place finishes.

All kinds of inverted finishes last light. PHRF keeps proving to be interesting.

Okay, that races was longer than I was expecting, but we definitely used all the daylight possible for the evening. I suspect the races are going to be hotter from now on, so it was nice to use all the beautiful spring weather left in the season!

Congratulations to Patrick Penwell and crew on Maddie for a first place last night. Lots of shifting winds made for a tricky race! Also congratulations to Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato and the crew of Taaris with Jay Tyson at the helm. Both had fast races coming in first.

Video from 5/31

So I'm still working on the sound, but at least we have a video!

At only 2.4 miles, it was a bit of a mad scramble out there. At least we got a few good shots.

The weatherman didn't get that one right! We could see a forecast for rain and storms hitting about 7:15 pm, so we shortened hoping that everyone could get in. Of course, the Bay broke up the storms. We should have known. Oh well.

We did get in a nice short race for the evening. Congratulations to Doug Abbott and crew on Hinesight for a fast race correcting first in the B class. John couldn't make it out, so Doug took over the stick for the evening. Also congratulations to Jim Ryan and crew on the Star class and Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato for fast races coming in first!

Nice wind last night for a good sail! We were thinking about a longer race, but decided that the possibility of storms was not worth staying out on the river. Most people decided to go non-spin, so the building winds didn't cause too much trouble.

Congratulations to Janet Schilling and crew on Penniless for a first place finish. Also congrats to Bob Flower and Jib Jallade on Lil' Buddy and to Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato for first place finishes in their classes.

You never know. Maybe I can do it! Here is the video from 5/3.

Nice night for racing! Turns out that the weatherman was right for one. We had the consistent wind from the south that made it possible to get a nice beat up to the D mark and then back. Everyone was able to get back to the dock before sunset - Plenty of good racing for one night!

Congratulations to Jim Ryan in the Star class for a fast race last night. Also coming in first looking good was Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato in A class and the crew of Ful Dek in B class.

Three races in for our 7-race spring series! Keep your fingers crossed for nice winds for the next 4 races.

Have you signed up for Mark Boat yet? We could use help for next week. Sign up here:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a48a4aa2caafc1-20171

It's a huge help to us when you sign up for mark boats once a year. We expect each boat that raced last year to sign up once. Remember - when you sign up for mark boat, you get an average score for that race so that it doesn't hurt your series standings!

May 11, 2017

Results from 5/10

I guess it wouldn't be a Wednesday Night if the wind wasn't completely unpredictable. No one had that forecast where the wind would go east and build. I'm glad we could have a race last night, but I sure wish we knew the wind was going to build as the night went on!

Congratulations to Jay Tyson and the crew of Tarris last night for a fast race! Also having a great night was Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato and Bobby Lippincott in the Stars.

A short race, but at least we were racing. Let's cross our fingers for consistent wind next week!

Yes, Virginia, there is a

Hotline!

410-745-4983

We set up this hotline so that you can call before a race to find out what we have planned. Normally it just says we're racing, but there are some occasions where the weather is iffy. What to do? How will you know if we are racing that evening?

Yes - the hotline!

410-745-4983

I leave a message on there every week (usually by 4pm) letting you know what I'm thinking. If we cancel, I'll announce it on there. The message will not change when it is closer than 45 minutes to the start. At that point, we are on the race course. Up until then, the message is good!

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum pays for and lets us use this number for some reason. They must be nice people over there.

May 6, 2017

Z isn't just for Zombies

You saw the Z mark on the SI appendix and you heard us talking about it. Now you can see it in the water!

How do you find it? Just plug the location into your GPS. Here is the location:

N 38:46.610
W 76:11.170

We might just use it any day here. Be sure you know where it sits on the course.

Just start with some wind and you can have a great season! The wind last night was fantastic. Well, it was dying fast as the night went on, but at least there was some wind out there. Coming out of the NW meant that we could have a nice long course for the Stars and the PHRF boats got to stretch their legs heading all the way down to Oak Creek.

Congratulations to La Quatrieme on A class for a first place finish. I was great to see her and Ostinato heading to the leeward mark with full sail. Lots of fast sailing!  Also congrats to John Hines in B class and to Bobby Lippincott in the Stars for a 1st for 1st place finishes. Bobby is a new competitor in our Star class this year. It will be fun to see if he can keep the veterans on their toes.

5.7-mile course for the PHRF boats! Let's hope the wind keeps up and we can race.

Taking a Scoring Penalty

What is the change for this year?

US Sailing is changing the scoring penalty, so we are too. Now it will be a 30% penalty.

Wait - What is this?

If you look in the Sailing Instructions under section 12 (penalties), you will see that there is an option for penalties. You can do the normal thing when you foul someone and take two turns, or you could take a Scoring Penalty. This additional option can help you a lot.

What happens if you break a rule, but you don't realize that you're at fault until after the race? You have finished, so you can't take two turns. You don't want to get disqualified. What do you do? That's where the scoring penalty comes in to help you out.

How does this work?

Read my description >HERE<. The example shows how this can help you out. Just something to keep in mind when racing - If you really think you are in the right, take your time and research it. You can still exonerate yourself with a scoring penalty.

Just 3 days until we're sailing!

Apr 29, 2017

Need some Mark Boat help

How are the preparations of your boat coming along?

Just 4 days until the first race!

We could use some help with the mark boat. If your crew or boat can't make a race, signing up for mark boat makes it possible to save those points! When you serve on mark boat instead of racing, you get an average of your points for the series. That way it doesn't hurt you.

Most of the dates are still available, so sign up now to serve a week.

I think we will have two different mark boats this summer, so lots of fun! Sign up now when you can still find a week open that you want.

Instructions are here!

Yeah! Now we're rolling!

You can get your own copy of the sailing instructions >here<

What's new? Not too much of a change from last year. We did change the scoring penalty so that you can take 30% (instead of 40%) You will see that in Section 12. Still better to do your turns on the course.

We'll probably have a few new things this year, but those things are probably too small for the SI. Like maybe more parties! We'll send you emails about that when we get closer.

Two weeks to go and we're sailing!

How do I subscribe?

Hum...

Do you know someone who can't figure out how to sign up for the emails from the site? It's pretty easy. Send them this link:

http://eepurl.com/NmTXb

It only asks something like 4 questions. They should be able to handle it from there.

You can always see everything here:

Skippers Meeting 4/19

That's right - the Skipper's Meeting is on Wednesday, April 19th, 6 pm.

If you're timely reading your emails, that is just two days away! Of course, we call it a skippers meeting, but everyone can come who wants. The main goal is to register boats and answer any questions people may have about the racing for the summer.

The secondary goal is to have a beer and tell big stories about how great you're going to do this summer. Everyone is welcome to come tell crazy stories!

Good fun.
