Hi Everyone,

Great sailing last night. I wish the wind had stayed with us, but at least it was a nice evening.

Congratulations to Spencer sailing with Bob on the Star Lil' Buddy for coming in first last night. Light wind apparently didn't stop them! Ostinato and crew had a great race last night too.  And Ful Dek, but you knew that.

You can see all the results >here<

Now is a good time to check your season standing to see if there are any errors. I'm just typing stuff here, so errors are completely possible.

If you see a square in Blue, that just means you were credited for doing mark boat. Even if you race, you can get credit for sending people on mark boat. You might also see a square highlighted in yellow. That is just a reminder for me that a throw-out is for a race other than a DNC. I check them each week.

Remember costumes!

Remember that the Race Committee has a special award for the "Best Dressed" crew on the last evening of the year. Always fun for those people who like to dress up.

Our last race is on October 2nd. If you're interested, we'd love to see you out there in a fun costume of your choice. You don't have to dress up. We will score your race the same, costume or not. But you could also compete for the awesome checkered "Best Dressed" jacket!

Good Times!

Nice temperature, nice humidity, nice sunset, Crazy Wind! I don't know what was going on with those wind shifts last night. Up to the north and then back down to the east. Pretty much pot luck every leg of the course!

It was great to see Bob's new boat out there last night. The new J/99, La Cinquieme, was out there on the starting line. They even came across the finish line getting the gun. Yay!

Congratulations to Joni and Ray for coming in first in the Star class. They were off for a few weeks, but it didn't seem to affect their performance! Also having a great race coming in first was John and the crew on Javelin in the A class as well as the crew on Ful Dek in the B class!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for coming out racing last evening. Very nice night for sailing despite the solumn nature of the day.

Congratulations to John and Rowan on Betty Ford for a first-place in the Stars. Also, congratulations goes to the crew of Javelin and the crew of Ful Dek for coming in first.

Great sailing everyone!

Results from 9/4 Jimmy Wilson Race

What great fun! An excellent evening with plenty of wind. Most everyone made it around the 6.8-mile course in about 1½ hours just before the rain came in for the evening. I think Mr. Jimmy would be happy to see the fleets racing.

We were trying to remember earlier the name of the race before it was renamed for Mr. Jimmy. It was the Bigelow Race and it was started by Mr. Jimmy and Ms. Jeannie in order for the Log Canoe Association to be part of CBYRA. Over the years I remember Magic racing in it several times and I think I remember Jay Dee racing too. After CBYRA stopped requiring the race, Mr. Jimmy loved and continued to run the race for years.

The downwind start for the race is always exciting. Amazingly, no one was over early, but people were definitely riding the line. The logic for the evening seemed to be to go counter-clockwise around the island, but we couldn't get close enough to see if it paid off.

Congratulations to Sean Callahan and crew on Bellatrix for a first-place finish in the A class. It was fun to see a Melges 24 on the course. Also having a great race finishing first was Tim and Tim on Tim's Boat in the Star class as well as Ful Dek in the B class.

Some days the Storm just heads right at you!

Congratulations to everyone who came out last night! We were watching the storms move around but did not think the big cell to the north was going to turn straight for us. Guess we were wrong.

All the Stars managed to finish without issue and make it into the Club. The PHRF boats, on the other hand...

Several boats finished well before the storm, but some were out there sailing to the finish as the winds picked up. We sat on the committee boat and finished boats as we saw them pass us. The order was the same as would have occurred without a storm.

Congratulations to John and Rowan on Betty Ford for a first-place finish in the Stars. Also having a great night was Javelin and Ful Dek.

Results from 8/14 Guest Skipper

Plenty of fun last night with the guest skipper night! Most (if not all) the boats out there had a guest skipper driving for the evening. The wind certainly wanted to test all the conditions before we could go in for the evening. We were able to get in nice long courses for everyone to really test those guest skippering skills.

Congratulations to the crew on ReJoyce for a first-place finish. I'm pretty sure I saw the skipper for the evening was Gary. Coming in first for the B class was Honey Honey. Was Kimber at the helm? And don't forget Wish coming in first in the Stars. Turns out Carl is a good skipper and crew.

Lots of fun! Thanks for coming out to try new boats.

Wind's going North, no East, no North, or ...

Okay. In July, the wind is supposed to be from the SW. Once you mess with the prevailing winds, strange things happen. And we certainly saw that! At least we were racing and it wasn't too hot. Let's call it even.

Still plenty of good racing out there. Congratulations to Jeff Bates and crew on Honey Honey for a great race and first-place finish! They managed to find some good shifts out there and covered the handicap. Also having a great night was Matt and Eric on Maddie in the Star class as well as the crew on Javelin. Good stuff all around.

7/17 Too Hot! Cancelled

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, we're going to have to cancel for tonight. There might be some wind, but the heat index is too high for us to be out there for any length of time.

We also seem to be down two committee boats last minute and that makes things just a bit complicated.

Sorry for canceling. We'll make it up to you with lots of great weather in the fall!

Jul 11, 2019

Results from 7/10

Great job out there last night! Everyone had reasonable starts with no one crowding the line. That let us get everyone started on time to make for a nice evening. And it was great out there! The Stars were able to get in a nice long race with reasonable wind over the evening. The PHRF boats were able to get in a 5.9 nm race with plenty of spinnaker work. All in all, just a great night to be out there.

The PHRF boats were out in force last night with 7 in each class. That was great to see and I'm certainly glad I made the starting line long. Congratulations to the crew on Javelin and the crew on Ful Dek for first place finishes! With all the spinnaker sets and gybes, there was plenty to do out there. I hope we didn't interfere with beer consumption.

The Stars has a race that lasted just over an hour which is great. We usually can't do that on a Wednesday with bad wind direction or strength.  Even with all that racing, it was still pretty tight right up to the finish. Congratulations to Palmer and Gauthier on Star 8024 for a first place finish!

And last night was the first all-girl Star team we remember in a while. Watch out, boys! Between Sewell, Ali, and Joni, you're in trouble!

You can see all the results >HERE<

Everyone is asking about the Mr. Jimmy and guest skipper races. Makes sense - it's hot out, so its time to race around the island. Here are the dates:

Hey, hey! How about a video from June 12th!

https://player.vimeo.com/video/345367949

Are we racing?

Yep!

There seems to be confusion about racing on 7/3. We're racing.

Last year we did not have races on July 4th because that would be crazy. July 4th this year is on Thursday, so there is no overlap with Wednesday Night Racing. We can race in peace.

See you out there!

Sometimes I think the weatherman is just torturing us with his predictions. The wind last night was perfectly acceptable. A little light at the start, but plenty of breeze as the night went on. We might just have to make our own wind predictions. Let me know when you get your degree in meteorology.

Congratulations to Palmer and Gauthier in the Star class for a first-place finish. I think it's their first racing on Wednesday night with us. Also having a great night coming in first was Willem and crew on Javelin and the Crew on Ful Dek!

Want to relive all the excitement from the multiple recalls? Maybe make fun of your friend who was clearly 2 boat lengths over? (I mean, come on - 2 boat lengths?)

https://player.vimeo.com/video/343489487

https://player.vimeo.com/video/343489487Bucky Buchanan was nice enough to take the video from last night and render it into something we can post up for everyone to watch. Thanks Bucky!

So who gets the vote for "Most likely to be heading the wrong way at the Start"?

Incidentally, we happened to catch Aunt Evelyn in the first frame out of pure coincidence. Or maybe we didn't. I can't really remember now. maybe volunteering gets your photo prominently displayed? But no, it was a coincidence.

Results from 6/19

Well, that was crazier than expected. That starting line was just all messed up. We're working on it.

Still a nice night to get in some racing. It was the longest night that we'll see for the year, so it seemed fitting to stay out and use up all the evening's surprises. The storms stayed comfortably to the north and the wind even came back up after an attempt to drop out.

Thanks to Bob and Sewell for stepping up last minute to help with mark boat. We needed it!

Remember to sign up for mark boat helper now:

We still need someone for next week.

Everyone should try to get in a week. If you took home an award last year, you should definitely be signing up for mark boat without my prompting. If you do mark boat, we give you an average score so it won't hurt you. And you should let others have a chance to come on first!

So how did everyone do? Not bad at all! Congratulations to John Jenkins and Rowan Perkins for a first place in the Star class. Coming in first in the A class was Willem Roosenburg and crew on Javelin and in B class it was the crew on Ful Dek. Awesome sailing everyone!

You can see all the results >here<

So several people asked about starts and general recalls.

Rule 26 talks about the starting sequence and how it should work. When you read it, you might notice that all the signals involve one sound. Rule 29.2 talks about general recalls and how that works. You might notice that the sound signal for a general recall is two sounds.

This "two sounds" is important. Two sounds mean that something unusual is happening. You might remember that a postponement also has two sounds. Even three sounds mean something special. This is by design. The designers of the rules wanted you to have audible queues about what is happening. One sound means normal things are happening in the sequence. More than one means something special is happening.

If you just started, then two sounds mean general recall. If you're in your sequence (like the PHRF classes were last night) then two sounds mean postponement. You can see how this would be confusing if we tried to continue the sequence for the PHRF classes (they just sounded two horns, so I thought we were in postponement). The rule makers knew this would be confusing, so that's why general recall means all clocks stop and we restart the recalled class.

Just part of the fun!

Sorry, I forgot to post! My only excuse is that I was working on Junior Sail all week and completely spaced. Just too many moving parts and one fell off my to-do list.

It was still a great Wednesday! Gotta love a nice windy night to stretch out a race.

Congratulations to Matt and Eric on Maddie in the Stars, Jeff and crew on Ostinato, and all the crew on Ful Deck. They all managed a first for the evening. The PHRF even got in a 6-mile course.

Clouds to the south of me, Storms to the north!

Despite the weather's best attempts to stop the racing last night, we were able to get in a nice sail. Reasonable winds over the evening that stayed up through most of the race. It did fall out near the end, but everyone managed to finish.

Congratulations to Willem Roosenburg and crew on Javelin for a first-place finish last night. Also having a great night coming in first was the Star Ludey (8045) and the PHRF B racer Ful Dek! Great job!

You can see all the results from last night >here<

Just to top off the evening, the RC got a visit from the local DNR to find out why we were shooting a gun. It seems someone complained we were shooting a shotgun at sailboaters. Give that we've been racing for 30+ years on the Miles, I'm surprised that it came up. The DNR didn't seem too happy at the person who called it in, so good luck out there crazy boaters.

Good night for racing last night! I thought the wind would die as the evening went on, but nope! It sure seemed like the wind was building as the night went along.  It was certainly puffy.

Congratulations to Bob Foley and crew on La Quatrieme for a first-place finish in the A class last night. Also having a great night finishing first was Matt Rajacich and Eric Wagner on Maddie in the Stars and Alex Schuster and crew on Swagman. New first-place finishers all around!

Yay! Finally, we're sailing again.

The water was pretty cold out there last night, so it was good that the wind was light. Gotta keep that spray down. I know everyone on the committee boat was pretty cold by the time we got back into the dock.

Still, we got in a race that was 4.8 nm with lots of legs and no storms as were predicted. It was great to see healthy sized classes for the first night with 8 in the Stars and 10 in PHRF. We even saw two new boats! I'm hoping the numbers will grow as the season moves on.

Congratulations to Will and Carl on Wish for a first-place finish in the Stars. Somehow they rounded the first leeward near the back and managed to climb through. Also having a great night coming in first was Jeff Staley and crew on Ostinato and the crew on Ful Dek.

Great job, everyone, for making it out the first night!

And it Begins!

So the countdown starts!

Tomorrow is the first race. Feeling confident?

If you want to know about times and the process, it's all in the Sailing Instructions.

One thing that helps make Wednesday Night racing work is Mark Boat duty! If you or your crew can take one week to help with setting marks, we will be set for the year. Just sign up to help one of the Wednesdays over the summer.

What do you need? Just 1-2 people and a willingness to help. There is some lifting and you might get wet from the anchor lines, but it is pretty low-impact. If you work on the mark boat instead of racing, we'll even give you an average score. That should make it very painless!

You can sign up for mark boat duty >HERE<

Do you know your boat will miss a week for vacations? That might be a great week go get crew to volunteer in the mark boat!

Did you win an award last year? I'm looking for you to sign up first!

Hotline!

410-745-4983

Don't believe the hype. You can always call to find out if I'm going out tonight.

We set up this hotline so that you can call before a race to find out what we have planned. Normally it just says we're racing, but there are some occasions where the weather is iffy. What to do? How will you know if we are racing that evening?

Yes - the hotline!

410-745-4983

I leave a message on there every week (usually by 4pm) letting you know what I'm thinking. If we cancel, I'll announce it on there. The message will not change when it's closer than 45 minutes to the start. At that point, we're on the race course. Up until then, the message is good!

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum lets us use this number for some reason. I think they must have forgotten that we use it. Be nice to them when you see them.

Register now

We missed you at the Skipper's Meeting on April 17th. We took care of a lot of important things.

So, what do you need to know and do to be ready for the Season?

First, let's get you registered. If you're on a PHRF boat, >HERE< is the form. Fill it out and send it with a check for $50 to:

St. Michaels Wednesday Night Racing
215 S Hanson St
Easton, MD 21601

Are you on a Star boat? You can get the form >HERE<. Since you already paid, you can just email the form to us.

What's new this year

There is one big change this year. We're combining the starts for the PHRF A and PHRF B classes. We will start the Stars and then we'll start the PHRF boats. When we do the trophies, we will still have an A class and a B class.

Don't panic! Are you trying to panic? It's okay.

Same classes and trophies you have seen in the past. We are just combining the two starts into one. With any luck, more B class boats will be able to finish in the light air. We will also be able to try some other scoring systems to see if they would work for us.

Okay - now go register!
